Fondation Mérieux and EpiConcept are launching a new 5-day course on epidemiology in complex emergencies.

The objective of the course is to strengthen participant’s knowledge and skills related to the response of communicable disease outbreaks affecting a country in the context of a complex emergency situation.

Target audience
This course aims to prepare epidemiologists to contribute to the multidisciplinary and international response to complex emergencies, and to apply their epidemiological skills to serve public health interventions.

Previous knowledge of infectious diseases and epidemiological methods (epidemiological study designs, surveillance).

Participants: 20-25 participants

The course fees are 3,000 € and will include:

  • Tuition: 1,900 €
  • Accommodation & meals: 1,100 €
  • If accepted, participants will be required to pay the course fees of 3,000 € in full to confirm their participation.

Training methods

  • Short lectures on epidemiological principles and methods used in Complex Emergencies
  • Interactive case studies in small groups
  • Challenges, aiming at making the participants face real-life situations
  • Movies
  • Round tables

During one week, two main scenarios will be used in all the training activities: the Haiti earthquake and subsequent cholera outbreak and the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

A core group of three facilitators with experience in complex emergencies will be present during the five days of the course. Other experts will join the course according to their field of expertise. Facilitators will include experts from national public health institutes, UN agencies, international organisations, NGOs.
