TEPHINET Holds Pilot FETP Accreditation Reviewer Training

FETP accreditation is TEPHINET’s primary quality improvement initiative for FETPs. Accreditation is an opportunity for FETPs to align with common standards supporting quality training and increased recognition of their value in developing a public health workforce capable of detecting and responding to health threats. The process and standards for accreditation were developed over a five-year period with input from TEPHINET’s global network of FETPs and partners.

TEPHINET assigns a review team to each accreditation application received from an FETP. These volunteer reviewers assess FETPs and make recommendations regarding a program’s accreditation status. Each reviewer must meet the following criteria:

  • Has 10+ years of field epidemiology and public health experience
  • Is an FETP graduate
  • Has no conflict of interest with the FETP he or she is reviewing
  • Is willing to complete reviewer trainings and refresher courses
  • Has excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Is available to complete the document reviews and site visit

New volunteers may not be selected immediately; selections are made based on matching program applications with volunteers’ language and other skills. The benefits of serving as a volunteer accreditation reviewer include:

  • Serving at the forefront of accreditation and ensuring increased global health systems capacity, higher quality and integrity of competency-based epidemiology training and delivery of essential public health services
  • Learning best practices from peer institutions
  • Professional development
  • Gaining the experience of being an accreditation reviewer, which is valuable for you and your institution
  • Working closely with other applied epidemiology practitioners, TEPHINET programs, and staff around the world

In 2016, TEPHINET completed its first cycle of FETP accreditation, which resulted in three FETPs becoming accredited. Now in its second cycle, the TEPHINET accreditation program trained a group of experienced and new FETP reviewers in a two-day pilot training in Stockholm, Sweden, from February 27-28, 2017. Training modules covered the following areas:

  • TEPHINET Strategic Goals and Development of the Accreditation Program
  • Accreditation of FETPs Indicators and Standards
  • Overview of the TEPHINET Accreditation Process
  • FETP Program Accreditation Application Submissions
  • Role of the Reviewer
  • Shared Leadership and Workload/Tips from Reviewers
  • The Site Visit
